Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre announces its
2010-2011 Performance season.
The Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre, a 35 year old, Actors Equity approved Showcase producing company, has announced its upcoming performance schedule.
The Company, led by Producing Artistic Director, Wayne Miller, will produce 4 plays in 4 venues, offering an opportunity for a high quality, live theatrical experience for the whole family.
Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre casts its shows with experienced actors based on a competitive audition process. Its directing and design staff has scores of critically acclaimed productions among its credits.
The productions for this season include a New York Premiere, a classic revival and two Pulitzer Prize winners. The plays are:
YANKEE TAVERN In its New York Premiere, Steven Dietz’s comedic thriller, set in an aging New York bar in 2006, discusses the truly American phenomenon of mass media frenzy, particularly the cyberspace theories surrounding the events of 9/11/2001. Described as “...lots of fun” by the New York Times, and written by one of America’s most prolific and produced playwrights, this will be a an exciting new theatre experience for everyone. Directed by Wayne Miller, Yankee Tavern will be performed on the stage of the St. George Theatre. Performances are September 23rd through September 26th.
JACOB MARLEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL. SIST presents a revival of this retelling of the classic Dickens tale by Tom Mula. Directed by Joseph Daly, the cast includes much loved Staten Island actors, Jack Dabdoub, Charlie McLaughlin, Joseph Taylor and Rina Sklar. Scrooge’s partner Marley, given short shrift by Charles Dickens, gets to tell his side of the story. Fun for the whole family! Performances at The Conference House, December 2 through 5th and at Historic Richmond Town, December 7th through 10th.
DOUBT, A Parable. John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play takes the Main stage of the St. George Theatre in February. Directed by Ken Tirado, this brilliant and powerful drama looks closely at suspicions and behavior at a Bronx school in the mid 1960’s. “An eloquent and provocative investigation of truth and consequences. A gripping mystery, tightly written.” Time Out. Performances at the St. George Theatre, February 17th through February 20th.
THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-IN-THE-MOON MARIGOLDS. A 40th Anniversary Production of Staten Island Playwright Paul Zindel’s Pulitzer Prize winning drama, set in Staten Island. This look at a dysfunctional family shows that hope and talent can rise above almost all conditions. Awaiting confirmations from both a star talent and a guest director, this play will be performed in the 3rd County Courthouse at Historic Richmond Town, following the success of Inherit The Wind and To Kill a Mockingbird. “Zindel reminds us, strong, strange, beautiful flowers spring from such compost heaps.” Time April 7th through April 17th.
