OPPORTUNITIES

SIST always welcomes volunteers who wish to be a part of the theatre, but may not want to act, direct or design. If you would like to assist the company, please contact us at mail@sistny.org. Positions are available as ushers, box office personnel, dressers, light board operators, props runners, etc.

We look forward to hearing from you.

The following positions will be available for next season. Although they are not salaried, each carries a small stipend as an honorarium.

The mission statement of the Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre states that “the company’s mission is to bring high quality live entertainment to the people of Staten Island and to provide an outlet for the creative abilities of the actors, directors and designers who make that community their home”.

In keeping with that mission, preference will be given in casting and other positions to people who reside in the community.

Director

Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre is a non-profit producing company based in Staten Island, New York. The company welcomes submissions from directors who are interested in working with us. The company is presently in residence at Historic Richmond Town, a living museum of various periods from colonial times to the late 19th century. The company performs in the 3rd County Courthouse, an actual courtroom complete with judge’s stand, witness box, and elevated jury box (none of these elements are removable.) In keeping with Richmond Town’s mission, the company is focusing on works that deal with “the American experience”. To that end, previous productions have included Inherit The Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Steven Dietz’s Yankee Tavern, Shanley’s Doubt and Zindel’s The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds. Shows currently in pre-production include Ladies at the Alamo, The Andersonville Trial and Julius Caesar.

The Director supervises the audition process and a 6-8 week rehearsal process. It is also the individual Directors responsibility to select his/her creative team and support team (Stage Manager, Set/Lighting/Costume/Sound Designers)to work within assigned budgets. Rehearsals are generally held on weekday evenings and weekend afternoons in locations apart from the performance space. Load-in to the actual performance space is usually within one week of opening. Previous stock/community directing experience is required.

Please send letter of interest with resume and support materials (web links, photos, etc) via e-mail to mail@sistny.org.

Production Stage Manager

Each production has, as a vital member of the production team, a “hands-on” PSM. This person will supervise the props staff, dressers, running crew, etc. This position requires great patience, technical skills and ability to think fast. This is a great opportunity for an ASM to move up. Also a perfect position for a recent college grad who wishes to build their resume. Please send letter of interest with resume and support materials (web links, photos, etc) via e-mail to mail@sistny.org.

Lighting Designer

The Lighting Designer position includes the role of master electrician. It is truly a “hands on” job. SI Shakespearean Theatre has a small inventory of lighting instruments and portable DMX dimmers. The control is a Lightronics 2448 console with memory.

The lighting designer must be familiar with power consumption, lamp and lens replacement, DMX addressing, soft-patch, etc. A small rental budget is usually available for each production.

Please send resume and support materials (web links, photos, etc) via e-mail to mail@sistny.org.

Scenic Designer

SI Shakespearean Theatre will be in residence at the 3rd County Courthouse in Historic Richmond Town, Staten Island for the next two seasons. This performance space, which seats 64, is part of an historic, land-marked building and presents unique challenges and opportunities. No permanent attachments can be made to either the walls or floor and all set pieces and properties must load in to the second floor via an enclosed stairwell (no, there is no elevator!).

The scenic design must be willing to work within small budgets and to work with volunteer carpenters, painters and helpers.

Occasionally, the scenic components need to be completely struck during the run, as the theater shares the space with other organizations. Here is a true chance to exercise your creative abilities!

Please send resume and support materials (web links, photos, etc) via e-mail to mail@sistny.org.

Sound Designer

The Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre owns a modest sound system consisting of a Mackie 8 channel powered mixer, York speaker system and a Toshiba CD player. Past sound designers have provided the design, pre and post show music and effects on laptops, DVD players, IPods and game consoles. Again, another chance to exercise your creativity.

Please send resume and support materials (web links, photos, etc) via e-mail to mail@sistny.org.
